Finding Artistic Meaning in Exodus, part I
Exodus, chapter 20, verses 1-6 is posted at the end of this post...
One of our devotional times during the Creative Summit was focused on reading scripture to find artistic meaning. We all gathered into groups of about 5 people and jotted down what we found. Here are a couple of highlights from several of the group discussions on Exodus 20:1-6:
- do not let your art become a form of idolatry
- be careful not to get carried away, don't worship the creative process
- God is connected to His creation
- be careful not to find our identity in our creation, but rather find our identity in our Creator
Again, I am sure there is more to discover regarding this passage, and I would love to hear your insight, so please leave a comment at the end of this post. If you have time, take a moment to read the verses below:
Exodus, chapter 20, verses 1-6
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
