Titisee, Feldberg; Trains and Buses

As we may have mentioned, we are taking language classes in Freiburg. Which is to say that we bought a Regional transportation pass to get us cheaply to and from Freiburg everyday. We realized immediately the added benefit of this card when we looked at where could go with it.

Today was our first such journey.

We began our day running some errands, so we did not actually get to our travels until nearly 1 PM. We headed to Freiburg, which is the hub of the "Freiburg Region." Go figure! Since we did not arrive there until just after 1, we figured that would be a good opportunity to eat lunch. We found a very good and very inexpensive Italian restaurant and promptly ate a ton of Pizza. (Pictures will come later, I promise!)

After filling ourselves, we headed back to the trainstation (der Bahnhof) to figure out which train we needed that would take us to Feldberg by way of Titisee. Now, part of this trip is scouting out places to take Jana's dad when he comes in a few weeks!!! We will probably go to Titisee, so we only needed to know how to get there and if it was worth getting there. We know and it is!!

We stayed on the train as it went around the beautiful lake that is Titisee. We were headed to Feldberg. Please keep in mind that we do not have any clue where we are going or what to expect. A short time later, we exited the train and looked around. There was basically 1 building and not much else. We started thinking that perhaps Feldberg was not a cute little town, as we had thought it might be.

We found a map of the area and saw that the "sights" of Feldberg were about a 7 to11 km hike, depending on what you wanted to see. We did not really want to see anything that involved an hour plus hike!! We knew, however that the train back to Titisee did not come for an hour, so we looked around and found a bus schedule. So much for the 11 km walk. After a 15 minute bus ride, we were at the Feldberg ski slopes. Most of the place was closed, as it is not ski season and it is Saturday.

We took a Seilbahn (cable car) to the top of the slopes and were treated to some breathtaking views of the tops of the Black Forest hills and the dark, green valleys. It was worth the hard work (and tons of laughing along the way). Yep, we took pictures.

After spending some time up there, we reversed our route, went back to Titisee, took the train back to Freiburg and went looking for food. We found an Ice Cream place (my fault). That was a good treat for the end of the day. We just barely missed a train, so waited a bit for the next train.

Needless to say, on the ride back, we were a bit tired and have only arrived back home a short time ago. We look forward to having some of these opportunities to see the area. We have a lot in our back yard and only have to leave the apartment to see it!!!

I need to answer a question from several people (no, you are not alone out there!)... we are wearing sweaters and coats because it was cold!!! The past few weeks, we have left the apartment to rain and 50 degrees, with highs in the 50s. We have had a few days of 70 degree weather, but Feldberg is a bit high altitude and windy, so those warm clothes were very cozy!
